West Chester University of Pennsylvania, or WCUPA for short, is a public university located in West Chester, which is the county seat of Chester County, situated in the US state of Pennsylvania, a borough with a population estimated at a number of nearly 18 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
WCUPA was established in 1871, tracing its roots to West Chester Academy, which existed between 1812 and 1869. The institution became part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education in July, 1983, when it also gained its current name.
WCUPA's athletic teams are known as the West Chester Golden Rams, and they compete in NCAA Division II, in the PSAC and ECAC, in various sports for both men and women, including in basketball, lacrosse, swimming, field hockey and soccer, in all of which the teams have won national championships. Their distinctive colors are purple and gold.
Among the most noteworthy names on the list of notable WCUPA alumni, there are: Chris Asplen - DNA policy expert, Tom Wright - TV and theater actor, Jill Biden - Second Lady of the US and American educator, Howard Dodson - director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, plus several others.
